The Heavenly Life

American soprano Sara Heaton has built a rich career spanning opera and concert stages across the country, earning acclaim for what Opera News Online called her “gleaming lyricism,” and the Chicago Tribune praised as her “sweet, pure soprano.” She has appeared with a striking range of companies and ensembles, including The Metropolitan Opera, The Santa Fe Opera, Chicago Opera Theater, Opera Boston, Boston Baroque, Odyssey Opera, American Opera Projects, Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Boston Midsummer Opera, Opera in the Heights, the Xalapa Orchestra, The Greater Bridgeport Symphony, The Santa Fe Symphony, North Country Chamber Players, Walden Chamber Players, and Symphony by the Sea.

Heaton made her Metropolitan Opera solo debut in the celebrated 2018 production of Cendrillon, appearing as a Spirit and Servant, and is currently a member of the Metropolitan Opera Chorus. Among her standout performances: the title role in Gilbert and Sullivan’s Patience and Celia in Mozart’s Lucio Silla, both with Odyssey Opera under conductor Gil Rose; a role debut as Violetta in La Traviata with Opera in the Heights in Houston; a Symphony Hall debut as Papagena with the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra under Federico Cortese; and Strauss’s Four Last Songs with the Xalapa Orchestra in Mexico under guest conductor Donald Palma. She can also be heard singing Amore on the Grammy-nominated recording of Monteverdi’s Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria, with Martin Pearlman leading Boston Baroque.

A committed interpreter of new music, Heaton has taken part in several notable premieres — most memorably as Miranda in the U.S. premiere of Tod Machover’s Death and the Powers, a performance singled out for its “daunting power and agility in the stratospheric notes of her final scene,” and praised as the finest of the evening. Other new-music credits include Tsering in excerpts from Pete Wyer’s Numinous City with American Opera Projects, Lidochka in Shostakovich’s Moscow, Cheryomushki with Chicago Opera Theater, and Jenifer in Tippett’s The Midsummer Marriage with Boston Modern Orchestra Project.

Heaton’s competition honors include first prize at the Marie Kraja International Singing Competition in Albania and second prize in the Young Patronesses of the Opera Competition. She has also received the Richard F. Gold Career Grant from the Shoshana Foundation and was a regional finalist in the Metropolitan Opera competition. She holds degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and Boston University.
