Symphony by the Sea Youth Orchestra

In a time of diminishing support for the arts in public education, the Symphony by the Sea Youth Orchestra provides young musicians in the North of Boston area with a unique opportunity to experience the joy of playing the greatest music ever written. SBSYO continues to flourish under the dedicated leadership of Alan Hawryluk, former Concertmaster and Assistant Conductor of Symphony by the Sea, and John Koza, clarinetist with Symphony by the Sea.

The Youth Orchestra provides a stimulating, non-competitive performance environment for aspiring young musicians. Participation is open to all interested 6th to 12th graders willing to commit to regular practice and rehearsal. The Youth Orchestra rehearses at Salem High School. Two concerts are given yearly, one during the December holiday season and another in the spring. All participants have several special opportunities to meet and learn from the members of the adult orchestra throughout the year.

For many years Orchestra Director and String Specialist for the Salem Public Schools, Alan F. Hawryluk has conducted Symphony by the Sea’s Youth Orchestra since its founding. He has also served for over 30 years as music director and conductor of the Salem Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1997 Mr. Hawryluk was named Orchestra Director of the Year by the Massachusetts School Orchestra Association.

Northshore Youth Symphony Orchestra

Symphony by the Sea supports the Northshore Youth Symphony Orchestra (NYSO). NYSO offers three levels of orchestra, an advanced wind ensemble, the NYSO Chorale, three flute choirs and a clarinet choir — serving a total of more than 275 young musicians from over 37 North Shore, Merrimack Valley and southern New Hampshire communities. NYSO also provides chamber music and outreach opportunities for its students through its program “Youth Serving Through Music.” Examples include concerts in nursing homes and a strings program that teaches violin to 75 children in Lawrence. Please call Trudy Larson at 978-685-7844 for further information concerning membership in any of NYSO’s ensembles or to schedule an audition. Visit us on the web at www.nysorchestra.org.
