Jonathan McPhee
Jonathan McPhee is equally at home as a conductor of symphony, ballet and opera. As Music Director for Boston Ballet, he has received critical acclaim for his work with the Company and Orchestra, which is the second largest musical organization in Boston. His recording of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker with the Boston Ballet Orchestra has sold over 65,000 copies. Mr. McPhee has also recorded Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty and Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet on the Boston Ballet Orchestra label.
In addition to his work with Symphony by the Sea, Maestro McPhee is Music Director of the Longwood Symphony Orchestra and the Lexington Symphony. Recent guest engagements include guest conductor for the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra and the Louisiana Philharmonic in New Orleans.
Mr. McPhee has served as conductor for many of the world’s most distinguished dance companies: New York City Ballet, The Royal Ballet (England), Martha Graham Dance Company, Joffrey Ballet, National Ballet of Canada, The Australian Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Houston Ballet, and the Norwegian Ballet. In addition to a broad repertoire in the field of dance, Mr. McPhee has conducted pops concerts, musical theatre and operetta. He has also conducted grand opera with Opera Boston, the American Opera Center in New York, and Boston University Opera. As a composer and arranger, Mr. McPhee’s works have been performed by orchestras and ballet companies around the world. Mr. McPhee’s compositions and arrangements are published by Boosey & Hawkes, Inc. Recent original works include Nightingale, Images for Orchestra and a new edition of Stravinsky’s complete Firebird for Boosey & Hawkes recently performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra and Baltimore Symphony. Mr. McPhee’s ballet entitled Birthday Variations was recently recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra.
Among the orchestras Mr. McPhee has conducted are the BBC Scottish Symphony, Buffalo Philharmonic, The Hague Philharmonic, Rochester Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Orchestre Colonne (Paris), the National Philharmonic Orchestra in London, the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Bergen Philharmonic in Norway. As a Pops conductor, Mr. McPhee has conducted the Boston Pops, the Colorado Symphony Pops, and Radio City Music Hall’s Grand Night For The Irish.
